New Faces Onboard at the Co:Lab

It all begins with an idea.

The History Co:Lab is excited to welcome three new members to our team. They collectively bring over 40 years of education and non-profit management experience, a passion for history education, and a shared goal to transform how history is learned and experienced in the United States and globally.

Romanus Berg is our new CFO/COO, responsible for all financial and business operations. 

Born in Guatemala City to German parents, Romanus has supported initial public offerings ($1.8B) and helped launch/grow citizen sector startups (from $1MM to $65MM.) He is a big fan of servant leadership. He has practiced it across multiple disciplines and roles, including CIO, COO, CFO, and Board appointments with organizations like OceanaAshoka, and now thehistorycolab

We are also excited to welcome Shaterra Martin as our Chief of Staff. Her responsibilities include supporting the internal systems for The History Co:Lab, managing public-facing opportunities and supporting communications and special projects.

As a former classroom teacher, Shaterra has seen firsthand the power of education as a tool for transformation. She is passionate about creating an equitable and just world and believes that begins with how we educate students. She has spent her career envisioning and executing equitable operations for multiple non-profit organizations, including Teach For America and LINK Unlimited Scholars, and consulting on equity projects with justice-oriented organizations like Love & Power Works and Williams and Associates, Inc. Shaterra holds a Bachelor of Art in Communications and Sociology from The George Washington University and a Master of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins University.

Finally, Tess Duncan joined the team in March as Lead for Products & Partnerships and is responsible for fundraising, partnerships, and product development.

Tess built her career as a museum educator and is passionate about developing learning experiences that champion history in ways that engage and empower people. She has her Master's in Decorative Arts History and certification in Museum Collections Management & Care, and in 2017 she wrote her Master’s thesis on historical artworks’ impact on modern diplomacy, examining how it bridges political divides and invites conversation to facilitate productive and collaborative relationships. Tess spent the last six years working with American art collections housed within the U.S. Department of State. She is continuously inspired by how learning from the past develops essential dispositions we need to navigate the complexities of the future.

We are thrilled that Romanus, Shaterra, and Tess bring their experience and expertise to our team of teams. We cannot wait to see the tremendous impact they make!

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
